About Wuhan
Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province in central China, is situated on Jianghan Plain, a river-crossed fertile land created by the Hanjiang River joining the Yangtze River. Divided by the Yangtze, Wuhan is known as the ‘Three Towns of Wuhan’ with Hankou and Hanyang on the west bank, and Wuchang on the east. The city contains many lakes and parks, including expansive, picturesque East Lake.
Wuhan is a city with both an ancient history and a thriving present. Historic relics excavated from ancient tombs tell the city’s long history dating back 3,500 years. In the period of Pre-Qin (770 B.C. – 221 B.C.), it was the land of the State of Chu (one of the seven warring states before Qin, in the country’s first feudal dynasty) and was the cradle of the brilliant Chu Civilization. Starting here, merchants followed the great Yangtze River and lake network to expand businesses throughout the entire country.
Wuhan is known as ‘China’s Thoroughfare’ it is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads, and expressways passing through the city and connecting to other major cities. Because of its key role in domestic transportation, Wuhan is sometimes referred to as “the Chicago of China” by foreign sources.
Wuhan is the place to find both history and natural wonders. Hubei Provincial Museum and Yellow Crane Tower are two places to appreciate ancient Chinese history and culture. In the museum, chimes excavated from tombs reveal the incredible achievements of ancient people in music, acoustics, and metallurgy.
Wuhan is known as one of the three stoves in China. During the summer, there are over 10 days when the temperature in Wuhan exceeds 40 °C (104 °F). The average annual temperature in Wuhan is 16.5 °C (61.7 °F), while the lowest average temperature appears in January and hits below 1 °C (33.8 °F). The highest average temperature usually occurs in July and August and is over 28 °C (82.4 °F). Annual rainfall in Wuhan is 1100 mm (43.4 inches), and most of the rainy days are in the summer.
