Environmental Science Produces World-Changing Professionals
With the rapid development of the global economy, industries and cities, human activities bring along many serious environmental issues such as natural habitat destruction, climate change, pollution of air, water and soil, overexploitation of natural resources, and extinction of species etc. These environmental problems seriously threaten the sustainable development of humans and the Earth. Environmental science allows us to understand the intricate relationship between humans and nature. It is an interdisciplinary subject that requires us to master multiple domains of knowledge such as sciences (including biology, chemistry, geology, statistics, mathematics, physics etc.), social sciences (including law, public relation, media etc.), and business management (including economics and project management etc.). We are committed to cultivating professionals with an environmental mission. Our goal is to enable students to fully understand global environmental issues, master the skills of sustainable environmental management as well as the skills and technologies to prevent or reduce environmental impacts.
Support for the National Policy of Eco-Civilization
In recent years, China has introduced policies related to green development, for example, “Ecological Civilization Construction”, “The Belt and Road Initiative” and “The development of Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA)”, all of which have addressed the importance of green development, circular economy, and low-carbon development. Therefore, Environmental science is a subject that is globally important and necessary. The GBA policy clearly states that development should focus on the sustainable development of urban agglomerations, strengthening environmental protection and ecological restoration, and promoting green and low-carbon modes of production, lifestyle, urban construction and operation.
Concurrent Development of Environmental Technology and Management
The curriculum of the Environmental Science Programme offered by BNU-HKBU United International College (UIC) is designed to balance students' professional development in both environmental management and environmental technology. Students can choose their own elective courses according to their personal interests, postgraduate goals and career preferences. Through four years of systematic learning, students will master the basic knowledge and skills of environmental science, including critically thinking about the causes of various environmental and ecological problems, environmental prevention and control technologies, ecological protection planning, environmental impact assessment, environmental management, green business management, and developing sustainable development strategies etc.
Development of Students’ Talents and Our Global Vision
In the new era, our society demands professionals who are skilled in environmental technology and management. We are dedicated to cultivating highly employable graduates for prestigious state-owned enterprises, foreign companies, government agencies, educational institutions, and laboratories etc. On the other hand, our graduates can also choose to further their studies. They can pursue their master's or doctoral degrees at top universities around the world (including Hong Kong China).
Special Provincial Recognition
UIC is located in the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone of GBA. Zhuhai is the only city in the Chinese mainland connected to the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions by land transport and is, therefore, geographically strategic. With this special feature, the Environmental Science Programme of UIC was awarded the “Featured Programme of Guangdong Province’s Higher Education Institutions” by the Education Department of Guangdong Province in 2020. Concurrently, the Environmental Science Programme together with Food Science and Technology Programme, was awarded the “Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Teaching of Biology and Chemistry Fully in English at UIC”. Lastly, learning environmental science has great significance as it can make our societies and the Earth a better place.
