Bachelor’s in Food Science and Technology at Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC)
The aims of this programme are to nurture graduates who are knowledgeable and competent in handling issues concerning production, marketing and management of food, and nutritional science. The programme will prepare students to be well-trained food scientists, technologists, regulatory specialists and food science professionals employed either by government agencies or private food industries, both local and foreign companies, establishing sales and manufacturing facilities in China.
Our curriculum maintains a current approach, encompassing the latest scientific, technological and industrial developments, aiming at providing the necessary human resources for the development of the food industry in China. The curriculum covers areas of general sciences, including General Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, General Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Analytical Chemistry, giving students a solid foundation in food science and technology. In addition, students are required to take a group of core courses specifically in food science and technology, such as Food Chemistry, Food Process Engineering, Food Analysis, Food Materials Science, Food Science Laboratory, Nutrition, Food Microbiology and Toxicology, Food Product Development, Quality Assurance and Safety of Food, etc. In addition, students will be encouraged to select some major elective courses based on their interests and plans for future development in two directions: science and technology,and business and management.
There are numerous opportunities for our graduates to gain employment in food industries, public health institutions, government regulatory agencies, food service providers, educational institutions, and other non-profit organizations. Since the medium of instruction at UIC is English, our students can meet the demand of many Chinese companies with a major focus on international business as well as that of foreign companies moving into China’s market. Since its inception in 2007, our graduates have been successfully employed as civil servants and technologists in private companies.
Our Food Science and Technology curriculum also prepares students to pursue higher degrees in food science and related disciplines in universities both in China and overseas. Many of our previous graduates were admitted to Master’s degree programmes in some renowned universities such as Cornell University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Hong Kong, and Lund University, just to name a few.
