The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a public research university in Shatin, Hong Kong formally established in 1963 by a charter granted by the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. It is the territory's second oldest university and was founded as a federation of three existing colleges – Chung Chi College, New Asia College and United College – the oldest of which was founded in 1949.

The Department of Electronic Engineering was established in 1970 by Prof. Charles Kao, former Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a 2009 Nobel Laureate who pioneered the use of optical fibres in communications. This programme features a dynamic and adaptive curriculum that covers a wide range of topics, including integrated circuits and electronic devices, opto-electronics and optical communication, microprocessors and computer architecture, telecommunication and wireless systems, medical instruments and telemedicine, multimedia and signal processing, electronic materials, and nanotechnology.

The courses on offer are designed to convey both theoretical and practical knowledge and provide balanced training in both hardware and software skills.

The work-study scheme in the Electronic Engineering programme allows students to spend one year working full-time in select electronics or IT companies. Under the Personal Tutor scheme, professors meet regularly with students to provide advice on their academic and personal development. Due to the generous support and patronage of professional societies, local industry and distinguished alumni, the Department is able to offer a large number of scholarships to our undergraduates. Programme graduates pursue successful careers in a wide range of hi-tech industry and business sectors including telecommunications, information technology, e-commerce, technology services, industrial manufacturing, and product design and development. Some of the graduates also choose to pursue postgraduate studies in local or overseas institutions.

Their Department was the first to introduce undergraduate programme in the Faculty of Engineering, CUHK. They have been committing to nurture future leaders in the electronic engineering field, and to invent advance state-of-the-art technology. The Electronic Engineering Programme features a dynamic and adaptive curriculum with a wide coverage on the latest technological developments. The courses offered are designed to convey both theoretical and practical knowledge and to provide balanced training in both hardware and software skills. The major topics of study include: Multimedia and Signal Processing, Integrated Circuits (IC) Technology, Microwave Engineering and Wireless Communications, and Microelectronics and Photonics. Apart from hands-on experience gaining from group projects, students are also encouraged to join the Work-Study programme and spend one year working in industry to enrich their practical experiences.

The 4-year programme of study leads to a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) honours degree, accredited by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Students graduating with requirement fulfilment would be recognized as qualified engineers.

About Hong Kong

Campus

Located in the northwest end of Sha Tin, 30 minutes by train from downtown Kowloon and 20 minutes to the Lo Wu border, the Chinese University is celebrated for the beauty of her campus. The 137.3-hectare campus built on a hillside is the largest and the most stunning in Hong Kong. Most of this area is covered in greenery which is nicely carved out of rocks on three plateaux, and nestled among the greenery are tasteful buildings featuring a mix of Chinese and Western architectural styles. The CUHK campus is a famous haven for many varieties of flora and fauna which great care has been taken to protect and enhance. It also commands panoramic views of the Tolo Harbour and mountain ranges nearby. Many poets have waxed lyrical about its harmonious tranquillity and scholarly atmosphere.

The pedestrian-friendly campus is perfect for bird and botany tours, as well as hiking, cycling and long leisurely walks. In fact, the Chinese University is home to some of the nicest walks in Hong Kong. A stroll from the MTR University Station to any of the University's Colleges may take you past a lily pond, rare trees, a Chinese pavilion, a tree-lined mall, monastic courtyards, a Chinese medicinal garden, famous sculptures, award-winning architecture and a plethora of other sceneries and structures as diverse and delightful. All this makes the Chinese University an ideal environment for intellectual and personal growth.

To guide the long-term development of its campus, CUHK has a Campus Master Plan (CMP) in place. Taking into account the teaching, learning and research needs of the University, the CMP maps out a sustainable and visionary blueprint for the development of the University campus in the years up to 2021 and beyond, setting the stage for CUHK to grow as a world-class institution enjoying both academic excellence and campus sustainability.

Living on Campus

Over 50% of CUHK undergraduates reside in more than 20 hostels of their Colleges. Jointly with six postgraduate halls, these accommodate over 8,000 students. In 2005, I-house began providing a multi-cultural living environment to local, non-local and exchange students.

Conveniences including transport to and from the University, on-campus transport services, parking, medical clinics, restaurants, a bookstore, banks, a souvenir counter, a supermarket and a hair salon, are also available on campus.
