1. Program Positioning
The study program, Mathematics with Computer Science is a prestigious and well-established program at the Technion. The study program is characterized by very strong foundations both in mathematics and computer science. On the basis of mastering deep and broad mathematical knowledge, together with all compulsory courses offered by top-level computer science programs, students will be able to pursue an academic or industrial career both in Mathematics, computer science and in the important interface between these two disciplines.
Students who will choose to pursue a professional career in the industry, financial institutions, etc. can further learn professional knowledge related to computer science, laying a solid foundation for working in the computer field.
2. Talent-cultivation Goal
Graduates of the program will master the basic theories and methods of mathematical science, receive systematic training of mathematical thinking, and master the basic thinking and research methods of computer science. Students will have the ability to make full use of mathematical knowledge and use computers to solve practical problems, so as to become senior professionals who can engage in research, development and teaching in scientific-technological, educational, or economic departments, or engage in practical application, development research, and management in production, operation or management departments.
The program is particularly successful with students who want to be involved with scientific programming or the development of algorithms that involve mathematical thinking. The program is to train intelligent students to be capable of doing research or pursuing a career in mathematics. It can also contribute to the entrance of career-related computer science.
Students who have completed the proposed degree will be competent to apply to any graduate program in Mathematics or Computer Science. For instance, in order to apply to the graduate programs at the Technion (Math or Computer Science) excellent students will not be required to complete additional undergraduate courses.
3. Cultivation Scheme
Students are required to complete 133.5 credits of courses in four years, including program core courses (112 credits), program elective courses (15.5 credits), and General Education courses (6 credits). Apart from theoretical teaching, the program offers experiments in computer science, graduation project, etc. as practical teaching.
16 credits of moral and political theory courses are requested by the China Ministry of Education. All courses are taught in English except ideological and political courses and physical education.
Students who meet the credit requirements for the degree will be awarded a bachelor's degree in Mathematics with Computer Science from the Technion and a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of GTIIT.
4. Course Curriculum
The program offers high-level courses in the most important areas of mathematics as analysis, algebra, geometry, topology, number theory, combinatorics, probability, modeling, and numerical analysis. In the area of computer science, the program offers courses in topics such as programming, computability, and data structure.
A list of the core courses offered by the program: Analysis, Infinitesimal Calculus 1, 2, 3, Function Theory (complex analysis), Algebra (linear) A, B, Introduction to Group Theory, Introduction to Rings and Fields, Combinatorics, Combinatorial Algorithms; and the courses of Computer Science such as Introduction to Systems Programming and Computer Organization and Programming.
In addition to the education in Mathematics and Computer science mentioned above, the program offers several courses in Physics and in Chemistry or Biology, these together with courses in General Education and English.
5. Faculty Team
The main body of the teaching is made by worldwide prestigious academics both in teaching and in research. As a rule, lecturers hold a Ph.D. degree in the discipline they are teaching. Furthermore, almost all teachers in the MCS program are researchers. Most of the tutors hold a Master's degree.
6. Teaching Conditions
As mentioned above, the courses offered by the program are mostly theoretical. The facilities are very modern, comfortable and well-equipped classrooms with excellent screens and multimedia which will support the teaching needs. For the Computer Science courses in the program, GTIIT offers all advanced computer facilities needed to conduct the corresponding courses.
