Bachelor’s in New Music and Interactive Entertainment at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU)

PROGRAM AIMS

This programme aims to provide students with in-depth education and professional training in New Music and Interactive Entertainment, proficiency in using various technologies to integrate, design, and create generative visual and motion arts, and intelligent sound and music. The graduates should be competent interactive entertainment designers and producers with expertise in entertainment experience enhancement through artistic visual and music creation, extended reality technology, and computational intelligence. The graduates should be capable of producing various scales of interactive entertainment artworks, from individual experiences to large-scale live performances. They should also have human-centric problem-solving skills to apply their competencies in various domains.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon completion of the programme, students should be able to:

(a) Apply mathematics, programming, software tools, theories, and principles in the areas of new music and interactive entertainment artwork creation in a technical and artistic context.

(b) Analyze problems critically and construct solutions based on human-centric design thinking, computational technologies, and visual art and music technologies.

(c) Design and synthesize new music and interactive entertainment artworks professionally, creatively, and artistically by integrating and employing computational technologies.

(d) Operate and evaluate new music and interactive entertainment development projects with efficient project management and appropriate methodology.

(e) Classify, generalize, and apply the techniques and skillsets in integrating visual and music art practices for new music and interactive entertainment.

Career and Further Studies

  • • Game developers, artists, programmers at tech companies like Tencent, TikTok, Alibaba, NetEase, Roblox China, etc. in Shenzhen and other cities. Tencent alone recruited over 7,000 fresh graduates in 2021.
  • • Audio programmers, machine learning engineers, audio technologists at tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, Apple, etc. to develop music/audio products and services related to the metaverse.
  • • Multimedia (sound and video) engineers and game developers at small and medium virtual production studios and game studios in Hong Kong.
  • • Broadcast, sound and video technicians in media production houses. The overall employment in this area is projected to grow 21% from 2020 to 2030 in the US.
  • • Unity developers, VR/AR researchers and developers at recognized research institutes like ASTRI and universities in Hong Kong. Over 100 such vacancies were listed on JobsDB in Feb 2022.
  • • Positions related to sound/music and interactive media design, production, and management in the creative cultural industries.
  • • Further studies in relevant taught postgraduate programmes locally or overseas, e.g. Master of Arts in Creative Industries and Cultural Assets (MACICAF) offered by the Department of Creative Arts, School of Arts and Social Sciences, Hong Kong Metropolitan University, MA/MSc in Music Technology, Creative Media, Arts Education, Art-Tech, etc from other Universities.

Entry Requirements

You are not eligible to apply to this program because:

The minimum age is 18.

English fluency is required.
You need to be either:
- A native English speaker
- Studied a degree in English before
- Can demonstrate a high level of English
- Having an English certificate such as IELTS level 6 or TOEFL 95 and above is an advantage.

Minimum education level: High School.

Application process:

Applying Online is simple in just a few steps. More information is available here.

The first steps are to choose the programs, pay the application fee and upload the application documents.

Once submitted to China Admissions, we will review your application within 2-3 days and proceed to the university or ask you for further clarification

After it has been processed to the university you will receive your unique application ID from each university.

The university may contact you directly for further questions.

We will then follow up each week with the university for updates. As soon as there is any update we will let you know. If you have made other plans, decide to withdraw / change address at any time please let us know.

After you have been accepted you will receive your admissions letter electronically and asked to pay the non-refundable deposit to the university.

Once you have paid the deposit the university will issue you the admissions letter and visa form to your home country.
