About Ningbo

Ningbo is located in Zhejiang province on the south shore of Hangzhou Bay, opposite Shanghai. 7,000 years old, populated with more than six million people and covering more than 1,000 square kilometres, Ningbo is a rapidly growing city. Ranked in the top ten of cities for business in China by Forbes, it is a thriving blend of enterprise, culture, education, tradition and entertainment.

Due to Ningbo’s eventful and lengthy past, it was ranked in 1986 as a famous historic and cultural city by the People’s Republic of China.

Ningbo has a number of shopping malls and areas which have a variety of international chains and high street fashion outlets. Wanda Plaza, Tianyi Square and New Oriental Plaza are popular destinations to come across the likes of Zara, H & M, Marks & Spencer, Levis, UniQlo and many fashionable Chinese outlets.

Alongside a number of international restaurants, Ningbo possesses an array of outlets serving a wide variety of Chinese food from different regions, with Ningbonese a typical speciality. Chinese food is not all spicy so don’t worry if you’re not a fan of chilies, there are plenty of options.

Coffee has grown to become very popular in China and with this, has come the rise of coffee shops. Coffee shops can be found on most streets in Ningbo with Starbucks and Costa Coffee among the most popular. Trendy outlets such as ‘Sugar Plate’ often offer free wi-fi and a nice atmosphere to stop and have a relaxing break.

Many international-styled pubs and bars reside in an area called Laowaitan, Ningbo’s ‘Old Bund’. Laowaitan is an area of Ningbo situated next to the river, offering international cafes, restaurants and bars. The cobbled streets are frequently occupied by students and Ningbo’s expat community.

The great number of lakes in Ningbo provide ample opportunity to take out boats, whether it be a pedalo or your own canoe. There are also designated cycling tracks in scenic spots such as Dongqian Lake.
