Master’s in Yenching Academy Master of China Studies Scholarship at Peking University (PKU)

Yenching Academy of Peking University aims to build bridges between China and the rest of the world through an interdisciplinary Master's program in China Studies.

Yenching Academy is a fully-funded residential program offering a wide array of interdisciplinary courses on China within the Humanities and Social Sciences. Working closely with their academic advisors, Yenching Scholars have the flexibility to create their own study paths by choosing from six research areas and a variety of extracurricular activities. Studying at the Academy represents a unique opportunity not only for intercultural and academic exchange but also for personal and professional development.

Fellowship and Study Frame

The Yenching Academy Master of China Studies Program is two years in duration. All admitted students will receive the Yenching Fellowship and are required to live on campus for the first academic year. The Yenching Fellowship covers tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, a travel stipend for one round-trip journey between the student’s base city and Beijing, a monthly stipend, medical insurance, and expenses for designated research trips.

Scholars who maintain good academic standing and continue to live in Beijing can apply for the second-year Yenching Fellowship, which covers tuition fees, on-campus accommodation or an off-campus housing stipend, a monthly stipend, and medical insurance.

📖Program Curriculum

Peking University Location

Peking University is located in the North West of Beijing in the University District (Haidian District).

It is about 15 minutes walk away from Wudaokou which is the centre of the University District. There is also a subway next to the Peking University Gate.

Campus Life:

Activities

“Being involved in activities allows you to take control of your experience at college and make it your own. You get out of college what you put into it, and that’s true outside of the classroom as well,” one student said.He also recognized that being a part of extracurricular activities has made him a more well-rounded person, and has helped him to develop the skills to become a leader.

Each year, hundreds of academic seminars and lectures are offered to students. Representative student activities include International Culture Festivals, PKU Top Ten Singers, New Year Eve Celebration, Chorus Competition, Freshman Art Performance, andChallenge Cup Academic Competition, among others.

International Cultural Festivals

The International Cultural Festival is held every October.It is a grand event in the history of Peking University’s cultural exchange, a brilliant exhibition of a multi-ethnic global vision,and on this vivid stage it will be set by the international students of Peking University.

On the appointed day, representatives from various embassies, university heads, and student representatives from home and abroad are invited to participate in a grand opening ceremony. International students will be representatives of their own countries, using their intuition and creativity to organize their own country’s booth.

PKU Top Ten Singers

The “PKU Top Ten Singers” annual contest always gains the hottest attention around the campus. After three rounds of competition, more than twenty contestants will meet in the competition finals.

Every year, a large number of songs written by students appear on the stage. In this competition, the charm, passion, creativity and talent of PKU students are demonstrated in full to their peers.

Beida Cup Athletic Championships

Every year, the PKU Student Union holds the Beida Cup Athletic Championships, which includes sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, etc. This event is a great opportunity for students from different departments compete with each other. It receives great attention from students, and promotes the athletic spirit on campus quite considerably

Introduction to some of the star student organizations:

Peking University Mountaineering Association (PUMA)

PUMA was founded in the year 1989, and has henceforth enjoyed great fame around campus. Mountain climbing, which combines natural exploration and scientific investigation, strives to exploit the rich, mountainous resources of the land. In the summertime,  social practice teams are organized to go to the border areas of the country, render services to the local people and harvest first-hand knowledge of their lifestyles at the same time.

Students’ International Communication Association (SICA)

Since its establishment in 1997, SICA was closely involved in the international exchange of Peking University, including the reception and interview of distinguished guests to Peking University, such as heads of foreign states, ambassadors, university presidents, social and commercial celebrities, etc.

SICA has developed into a friendly interface for student exchange by organizing various international forums and festivals inviting participation from Chinese and international students both from home and abroad. For instance, some events include the JING Forum with University of Tokyo, the Beida-Harvard Exchange Camp, The Peking Globalist with Yale University, etc.

Loving Heart Society of Peking University

This is the first community service student association in China. They promote the concept of equality and civil rights; help the disabled and the handicapped, and volunteer in the countryside to help the poor. On campus, they distribute flyers and tips, in addition to reminding their fellow students to have generous hearts in society.

Acceptance Rates

Peking University is one of the most competitive universities in China. Chinese students, who take the Gaokao test at Peking University, have an acceptance rate of less than 1%.

However, international students applying to Peking University have over a 95% acceptance rate on China Admissions as long as they meet all the application requirements and criteria. MBA and MBBS programs are the most competitive to get into. 🏠 Accommodation

The dormitories for international students at the main campus are located at Shao Yuan (勺 园). There are limited spaces on campus for international students so students can stay in private accommodation outside of the University. Many students stay in private apartments in the Wudaokou area.

💸 Living Expenses in Beijing

Expense Average costs
Accommodation On average, a single room student dormitory accommodation will cost about RMB 1500 per month, or about RMB 18,000 per year, including utilities.
Food A meal at the university canteen/restaurant or in a fast-food restaurant outside would cost about RMB 7 to RMB 30. The average monthly bill for students that will study in Beijing, China can be between the range of RMB 1800 to RMB 4000.
Transportation A one-way local transport ticket in Beijing costs about RMB 4. The taxi start rate costs about RMB 13, plus the additional taxi rate per kilometer of about RMB 2.30. A monthly transport pass for university students in Beijing would cost around RMB 200.
Extra costs: Some extra costs for university students who will study in Beijing, China are books and study materials around RMB 210 to RMB 350 per month (increased costs for those studying Sciences, Medicine, or Art), and medical insurance of about RMB 400 per six months.

The first steps are to choose the programs, pay the application fee and upload the application documents.

Once submitted to China Admissions, we will review your application within 2-3 days and proceed to the university or ask you for further clarification

After it has been processed to the university you will receive your unique application ID from each university.

The university may contact you directly for further questions.

We will then follow up each week with the university for updates. As soon as there is any update we will let you know. If you have made other plans, decide to withdraw / change address at any time please let us know.

After you have been accepted you will receive your admissions letter electronically and asked to pay the non-refundable deposit to the university.

Once you have paid the deposit the university will issue you the admissions letter and visa form to your home country.
