Southeast University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China, whose origin can be traced back to 1902, when it was founded as Sanjiang Normal College. In 2000 Nanjing Railway Medical College (which is listed by WHO), Nanjing College of Communication and Nanjing Geological School were incorporated into Southeast University.
Southeast University places equal emphasis on research. It is one of the top 10 universities in scientific research and development in China,with over 20 national or provincial research institutes and a number of key research bases.

In the development of Southeast University, international cooperation & exchanges play an important role. About Nanjing
SEU is located in Nanjing, China at the lower reaches of the Yangtze River (the third longest river in the world). Nanjing, an ancient capital city for 10 dynasties in history, is now the provincial capital of Jiangsu, one of the most developed provinces across China where more than 1/2 of the world’s top 500 multinational corporations have set up about 700 subsidiaries. The well-developed highway, railway and airway system makes the transportation to other parts of China and the world very convenient.
Campuses
Southeast University has campuses as Sipailou,Jiulonghu and Dingjiaqiao, covering a total area of 393 hectares.
The main campus, Sipailou Campus is located at the center of Nanjing city, an ancient capital for six dynasties. To the west of it is the Purple Mountain and to the south is beautiful Xuanwu Lake. Sipailou Campus is currently a base for the education of senior undergraduates, continuing education and science and technology research.
In the summer of 2006, the headquarter was moved to Jiulonghu Campus, opening a new chapter in the history of SEU. Jiulonghu campus is located in the south part of Jiangning Development Zone. The architectural planning of the campus is based on the history and culture of SEU, combing the public central teaching cluster with the professional teaching clusters, thus formating a campus of forest and vitality, mingling the oriental and occidental styles. The Jiulonghu campus has architectures including teaching area, scientific research and experimental area, administrative area, undergraduate living quarter, graduate living quarter, faculty living quarter, logistics and security area, etc.. The university library possesses 3971.7 thousand of all kinds of books and materials.
Dingjiaqiao Campus is a place where SEU’s School of Medicine and affiliated Zhongda Hospital are situated.

Living in University
SEU holds different kinds of student activities like tree planting, sports meetings, various competitions etc.
International students can have their dinner at school cafeterias or nearby restaurants, and the expense is about RMB 800-2000 per person a month.
