Education for international students has always been a priority for internationalization of the university, which has been enrolling international students for nearly 20 years. In the past 3 years, around 2000 international students from 42 countries all over the world have been in registrations for various degree and non-degree programs offered by the university. To ensure a fruitful and pleasant study and living experience of international students, special efforts have been made by the university to provide favorable conditions for academic pursuit and everyday life, including modern facilities such as labs, libraries, internet connections, sports grounds, etc. and comfortable dormitory buildings on its different campuses. The university has also set up scholarships on different levels to encourage talented international students to come and do studies in its various programs.
Founded as a teacher training school in 1908, Hangzhou Normal University has a history of over 100 years, which has bestowed the institution with a glorious tradition of producing first-rate teachers and educators at different levels for the whole Chinese nation. Through a century’s development, the University has now become a comprehensive institution of higher education with a full spectrum of disciplines, covering such areas as arts and sciences, humanities, education, music, engineering, information technology, business, law, medicine, and nursing.
Hangzhou Normal University currently offers about 60 undergraduate programs and over 80 graduate programs conducted in its 2 faculties and 19 schools. While maintaining its honored tradition of excellence in education, the University has been attaching equal importance to research, with a faculty capable of undertaking research projects in different areas, both basic and applied, to address pressing issues and challenges in economic development and social progress of today and in the future for the region, the nation and the world.

Hangzhou, reputed as “Paradise on Earth” for centuries in China, is one of the country’s most renowned and prosperous cities. It is well known for its remarkable economic growth and social progress with reputable efforts in sustainable development in the past several decades as well as the rich cultural heritage as possessed by an ancient capital of China and the breathtaking natural beauty as represented by the world-famous West Lake.
In the year of 2007, the Hangzhou Municipal Government launched a campaign calling on its citizens to make joint efforts to develop the city into one of “Quality Living”, which encompasses the quality improvement in all aspects of people’s life, including economic development, travel resources, health and well-being, social stability, employment, household income, government efficiency, educational qualification, environmental protection and infrastructure. As a result, the City has been listed at the top of the few “Happiest Cities in China” for five consecutive years, in addition to the awards of “UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor” from the United Nations and the title of “International Garden City” it won in 2001 and 2002 respectively.

The West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, comprises the West Lake and the hills surrounding its three sides, covering a total area of 59 sq. km. It has inspired famous poets, scholars, and artists since the 9th century with numerous temples, pagodas, pavilions, gardens and ornamental trees, as well as causeways and artificial islands.
Scholarships
In order to encourage excellent international students from different parts of the world to come to study at Hangzhou Normal University and current international students of the university to work hard and achieve all-round excellence, the university has set up various scholarships for international students, and the implementation measures are hereby formulated for the optimal awarding and management of the scholarships.
The University provides the following scholarships to encourage excellent and hard-working students to come and pursue studies on its campuses:
Confucius Institute Scholarship
Set up by China’s Confucius Institute Headquarter and granted to international students from Confucius Institutes worldwide that show excellence in their studies of Chinese language and culture. The scholarship includes tuition and living expenses, including books, accommodation, meals, etc. Applications may be sent to the Confucius Institutes of the applicants’ home country.
Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship
Set up by Zhejiang Provincial Government and grated to international students that excel in their studies at the university, with 3 types:
- Type A: RMB 30000 yuan/year for graduate studies;
- Type B: RMB 20000 yuan/year for undergraduate studies;
- Type C: RMB 6000 yuan/year for Chinese language and culture studies
Hangzhou Municipal Government Scholarship
Set up by Hangzhou Municipal Government and granted to international students that excel in their studies at the university, with 3 types identical to Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship described above.
Hangzhou Normal University Scholarship
Set up by the University and granted to international students that excel in their studies at the university, with the following 3 types:
- Type A: tuition waive and living allowance (undergraduate and graduates students);
- Type B: partial tuition waive (all students);
- Type C: one-off scholarship (long-term Chinese language learners)
Campuses
As the key municipal university, Hangzhou Normal University has five campuses — Xiasha Campus, Wenyilu Campus, Yuhuangshan Campus, Gudangwan Campus, and Xianghu Campus — covering a total area of around 1400 mu (approx. 93.38 hectares).
