I) Program Background:

UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) is launching a new master's program in environmental engineering for international students. This new program leads to the degree of Master of Engineering (M. Eng) which is a research-based degree with the objective of preparing graduates to pursue careers in research, teaching, engineering design, management and planning, and leadership roles in the knowledge-based environment.

International graduate students recruited in the new master's program have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members on a wide variety of exciting research and development projects. Excellent opportunities are available for students to be immersed in a vibrant research-intensive environment. Students successfully complete the program will be awarded the Master's Degree by Tongji University. IESD has research scholarships available for deserving candidates who are excellent in their undergraduate study and wish to pursue a research degree.

This program aims to educate students and prepare them to pursue careers in research, teaching, engineering design, management and planning, and leadership roles in the knowledge-based environment. Students are expected to master various concepts and gain knowledge of pollution control, environment protection, and resource conservation issues.

The master program is designed to foster high-end business officials and managerial personnel for the recipient countries, offering a two-year master programs for the purpose of educating high-end and inter-disciplinary talent working in the applied fields of government, trade, foreign affairs, agriculture, technology, education, culture, and health, building intellectual capacity and facilitating the economic and social development of the recipient countries. 

II) Coursework requirements: 
For Master's Degree students, the minimum course credit requirement is 28, which is composed of:

• Public Compulsory Courses (Language and Culture) (6 credits)
• Professional core courses (10 credits)
• Professional elective courses (10 credits)
• Compulsory Links (2 credits)
• Total Credits of 28.

The minimum coursework requirement is 18 credits from compulsory courses and 10 credits from elective courses. With the guidance of the adviser, the student may take more courses over and above the minimum requirement. 

III) Thesis  requirements: 

The thesis is a fundamental and essential component of the program. It is the main evidence that is available to the academic community by which the student is assessed in his/her abilities to synthesize and integrate environment sciences and engineering knowledge into new paradigms or knowledge. The thesis work will be undertaken under the guidance of a thesis supervisor assigned by the Dean. Normally, thesis supervisors are faculty members of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University.
 
Students should complete research proposal writing before the end of the second semester. As part of the graduation requirements, an article based on the thesis may have been published or have been accepted for publication in a refereed journal.

IV) About UNEP-Tongji IESD 
UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) was jointly established by Tongji University and UNEP since 2002. The institute has enrolled 525 students from 89 countries into the degree program. The Environment discipline of Tongji University ranks A+ among the 155 universities in China according to the recent evaluation by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
