One of the earliest universities to provide Chinese language programs to international students in Shanghai, SHNU started to accept international students in 1965. SHNU is one of the authorized universities to accept international students sponsored by Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Scholarship, Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship and so on. SHNU has three Confucius institutes which were co-established by SHNU and the University of Missouri in America, Fukuyama University in Japan and the University of Botswana in Botswana. With a global view, SHNU has established cooperation and exchange relationships with more than 200 universities and academic institutions from over 30 countries, including Havard University in USA and Waseda University in Japan.
Introduction of ICCS
International College of Chinese Studies (ICCS) is the particular college to provide Chinese language programs to international students in SHNU. With the first-class teaching faculty, ICCS attracts nearly 2,000 international students from more than 40 countries all over the world every year. ICCS provides short-term Chinese programs, long-term Chinese programs, Chinese programs for Bachelor’s degree, Chinese programs for Master’s degree and Chinese program for Ph. D. degree. ICCS is one of the official training bases for Chinese teachers and principals of overseas Chinese schools authorized by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of National Council. ICCS is one of the official test centers of National HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi: Chinese Proficiency Test), National Research & Development Center of HSK (Tourism) and New HSK (Advanced Level). ICCS has Shanghai Key Discipline of TCFL (Teach Chinese as a Foreign Language), Institute of Applied Linguistics of Shanghai Key Research Base and the journal of Research on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. ICCS has rich resources of teaching staff and 90% of them have overseas teaching experience. ICCS has completed and is conducting many national and municipal research projects. ICCS boasts its unique language environment with both Chinese students and international students studying in the same college. Lots of interactions are encouraged among students to create multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment.
Campus
SHNU has two main campuses, Xuhui Campus and Fengxian Campus, covering an area of over 1.62 million square meters. International students in ICCS study and live on Xuhui Campus. Very close to Xujiahui, one of the most prosperous areas in Shanghai, SHNU boasts very convenient transportation in Shanghai. With excellent faculty, comfortable living environment and beautiful scenery, SHNU is the ideal place for international students to study Chinese language and culture.

Extracurricular Activities
ICCS holds clubs for international students such as Calligraphy, painting, photography, erhu (a traditional musical instrument in China), martial arts, yoga, dancing, learning to cook Chinese food, etc. ICCS holds other extracurricular activities for international students such as Chinese corner, Chinese speech contest, Chinese culture competition, talent competition, international culture week, sports games, New Year’s party, etc.
Field Trips
ICCS organizes field trips (language practice activities) for international students every semester. Teachers in ICCS have accompanied the international students to travel over many places of historic interests and scenic beauty to experience the traditional culture and beautiful natural scenery in China. The places we have travelled to include Beijing, Xi’an, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Xiamen, Hainan, Zhangjiajie, Jiuzhaigou, Huangshan, Wuyishan, and so on.
Cafeterias
Shanghai Normal University has six cafeterias and three restaurants on campus. Students may use their student ID cards to pay their meals in the cafeterias after they deposit money in their student ID cards in the University Information Center. Meal times for the cafeterias: Breakfasts: 06:30 ~ 08:30 Lunches: 10:30 ~ 12:30 Dinners: 16:30 ~ 18:00

Supermarkets near Shanghai Normal University are: Walmart Supermarket, Hua-Lian Supermarket, Jia-De-Li Supermarket, Carrefour Supermarket and so on. Shanghai Education Supermarket is on campus.
Fitness Facilities:
Shanghai Normal University has International Students Center, football playground, basketball playground, volleyball playground, table tennis room, badminton court and gymnasium etc. on campus. There are many gymnasiums around Shanghai Normal University.
