📚About the Program

NOTE: It is a must for our MBBS students to be able to communicate and be fluent in Cantonese since they will come into contact with patients and most of patients in Hong Kong speak Cantonese. Candidates’ ability to communicate in Cantonese will be assessed during the interviews. Candidates are allowed to present themselves in Cantonese, supplemented by Mandarin during the selection interviews.

The University of Hong Kong's (HKU) MBBS curriculum aims to produce doctors who are forward-thinking, well-informed, and capable of delivering effective, humane, and ethical medical care. They also prepare you to engage in lifelong learning and to have the skills necessary for postgraduate training.

Their programme also provides you with ample opportunities for personal growth that will carry you well into your later years when you will serve and excel as responsible citizens, colleagues, teachers and friends within our profession and community.

What You’ll Study

The MBBS curriculum runs for six years or 12 semesters. During your studies, you will build on acquired knowledge, starting with pre-clinical education and advancing to clinical clerkships, where you will put your skills and understanding to work.

These goals are delivered across each of their four themes covering areas pertinent to doctoring:

  • Human Biology in Health and Disease
  • Professional Skills: Diagnostic, Problem Solving, Effective Communication and Clinical Management
  • Population Health, Health Services, Economics and Policy
  • Medical Ethics, Professional Attitudes and Behaviour

Exciting Opportunities

Early Clinical Exposure and Structured Acquisition of Clinical Interpersonal Skills

From the first semester of Year 1, you will start learning the interpersonal and clinical skills necessary for effective and compassionate care for patients.

Enrichment opportunities

Your third year of study, which we call the Enrichment Year, will give you an unprecedented opportunity to explore areas of interest to you in either medical or non-medical fields, in Hong Kong or abroad, and design your own learning program. Similarly, in Year 6, after the final examination, the four-week MBBS Elective lets you delve into a medical area of your choice.

Practicing Scientific Research

HKU actively encourages its undergraduate to undertake research. As a medical student, you will participate in Health Research Projects that lead to output in the format of a scientific journal. Your research can be clinic-based or laboratory-based research and it can either be part of a project with Faculty staff members or one that you initiate on your own.

Professional Recognition

Your MBBS is a registrable primary qualification by the Medical Council of Hong Kong and an important milestone on your path to becoming a doctor. But there is one final requirement before you can practice as a licensed doctor in Hong Kong. After graduating, all MBBS holders are required to undergo one year of internship in a public hospital. The internship will take you through rotations in the major medical specialties and give you hands-on exposure to clinical medicine, while receiving close supervision and teaching from experienced doctors.

If you want to become a Specialist, you should then be prepared for more years of postgraduate training and further examinations. Postgraduate and specialist training is administered through the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and its constituent colleges.

Career Prospects

HKUMed graduates are a heterogeneous group of doctors, many of whom are now in leading positions in a variety of fields, not just medicine. Some serve the community as public hospital doctors, others run their own clinics as private practitioners. Some love clinical teaching and research and have pursued academic careers in Hong Kong or overseas, with many becoming world-renowned clinical experts and scientists.

Some have become health administrators involved in policymaking and health care planning for their community, others have made their mark in non-medical careers, such as law, business, or pharmaceutical development. Whatever path you with to take, HKUMed is here to help your dreams come true.

About Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. It is a place with multiple personalities as a result of being both Cantonese Chinese and having been under British colonization. Today, the former British colony is a major tourism destination for China’s increasingly affluent mainland population. It is an important hub in East Asia with global connections to many of the world’s cities. It is a unique destination that has absorbed people and cultural influences from places as diverse as Vietnam and Vancouver and proudly proclaims itself to be Asia’s World City.

Campus

The university’s main campus covers 160,000 square meters of land on Bonham Road and Pokfulam Road in the Mid-Levels of Hong Kong Island. HKU buildings are some of the few remaining examples of British Colonial architecture in Hong Kong. The university lends its name to HKU Station, the main public transport access to the campus opened in 2014.

Life on Campus

Student welfare is served by several units, including the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), which provides guidance for most areas of student life including career counseling, and the University Health Service, which provides health care, referrals, and preventive services.

On campus, there are fast food restaurants and cafes at convenient locations that offer a wide range of local delicacies, exotic cuisines, western food, Halal Food, coffee, pastries and healthy vegetarian food, where you can enjoy with your friends at a reasonable price. There are outposts and grab-and-go counters scattered around the main campus offering light meals, beverages, and snacks for those with a tight schedule or in a rush. Fast food restaurants situated at Jockey Club Student Villages I & II, Sassoon Road Campus, as well as snacks kiosks in sports center all, offer ranges of delicacies to meet the demands for food.

Two officially recognized student bodies, the Hong Kong University Students’ Union (HKUSU) and the Postgraduate Students Association (PGSA), give opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular activities.

HKUSU principally serves the undergraduate students. It offers more than a hundred clubs and associations for students. These organizations renowned amongst student activists, has been the main driving force behind evicting a chancellor in recent years. There was controversy when the head of the union, Ayo Chan, said that some of the protesters involved in the Tiananmen Square massacre had acted irrationally.[80] Many students thought his remarks were offensive and he was ousted by a vote in under one week. The Postgraduate Students Association represents the university’s postgraduate students.
