Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) is a high-level university that aims to develop chemical talent at the cutting-edge of science and technology. The university was established in 1958 and formerly known as the Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology. As a national key university directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and as one of the Project 211 universities and 985 Project Innovation Platforms, BUCT has responsibilities for basic and applied scientific research; original, high-tech development; and the training of high-level, innovative talent.
With half a century of history, BUCT has become a multi-disciplinary university with a solid foundation in science and engineering, as well as other distinctive disciplines such as management, economics, law, literature, education, philosophy, medical sciences. The university is a multi-level training system for undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and students from foreign countries. Since its establishment, BUCT has trained more than 100,000 people for China.
BUCT has a total of 14 colleges with 15,249 full-time undergraduate students; 6,303 full-time graduate students (including 804 PhD students); and 460 international students. The university also has 4,096 continuing education students, including those in higher vocational education, the correspondence university, and the night university.
BUCT has 2,354 faculty members, including 1,093 full-time teachers; 771 are full or associate professors. Faculty members include: 11 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent; 7 experts from the National Thousand Talents Program; 8 Chief Scientists in the 973 National Program; 24 winners of “the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars”; 7 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund; 2 winners of the Chinese Young Women Scientist Award; 11 Distinguished Professors and 2 Chair Professors from the Cheung Kong Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education; 2 Young Scholars from the Cheung Kong Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, 71 from the Cross-Century Talent Program of the Ministry of Education.

BUCT has been committed to industrialization and the transformation of high-tech achievements, and has qualified as a "National University Science and Technology Park." The science and technology industry of BUCT has more than 20 science and technology industrial entities, which are closely integrated with teaching and scientific research at the university. BUCT’s high-tech industries rely on the university’s advantages in science, technology, and talent and strive for the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements. High-tech industries that have the characteristics of BUCT have been established, and they have produced a variety of technologies and products in biochemical engineering, household chemical engineering, fine chemical engineering, new chemical materials, and other fields. In recent years, BUCT has also cooperated with local governments and has focused on setting up local institutes of science and technology in advanced materials, industrial biotechnology and other fields in the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Bohai Rim regions.
BUCT gives much attention to international academic, cultural, and educational exchanges. The university has established academic cooperation with 107 universities, including those from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Germany, Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Japan. BUCT now cooperates with more than 30 foreign institutions and has started more than 40 overseas study programs for students, including student exchange programs, joint training programs, degree programs overseas summer camps, overseas internships, and international conferences and competitions. 285 students enrolled in these programs in 2016. BUCT has also opened multi-level educational opportunities for foreign students, including language students, undergraduates, graduate students, and doctoral students. In 2016, BUCT had 460 international degree students. BUCT has a number of high-level international cooperative projects, such as the "Overseas Expertise Introduction Project for Discipline Innovation" (referred to as "111 Project"), the "Overseas Higher Cultural and Educational Experts Introduction Project", the "High-end Foreign Experts Project ", and the "Overseas Top Teacher Project". These have gradually led BUCT’s research teams to the cutting-edge of technological advancement.
School of International Education
The college currently undertakes educational and management functions of Sino-foreign cooperative education programs and the training of foreign students in China. It has established in-depth cooperative relations with more than 40 universities in more than 10 countries, including the United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, and Ireland. At present, Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs include: undergraduate programs of mechanical design and manufacturing and automation majors at the University of Detroit (foreign docking: robotics and electromechanical engineering), and undergraduate programs of bioengineering at the State University of New York's Environmental Science and Forestry ( Docking with foreign parties: major in biological process engineering), undergraduate project with industrial design major at the University of Genoa, Italy (docking with foreign parties: product and ship design major). The college introduced high-quality educational and teaching resources such as the advanced educational concepts, teaching methods, and talent training models of partner universities, effectively promoting the international integration of our school's professional and faculty teams, and building an international team including many well-known experts at home and abroad. Transform the teaching staff, and promote the quality of talent training in our school to the advanced international level.
The college currently has more than 600 foreign students coming to China. Relying on the professional advantages of our school, the college has continuously improved the training system for foreign students in China. At present, it has established a comprehensive Chinese and Chinese national education curriculum system and has established 6 master's courses taught in English and taught in English. There are 58 courses, including 1 national-level excellent English course and 21 university-level excellent English courses and training courses. The college has also effectively used international resources to build a platform for industry-university-research cooperation. Currently, the “Belt and Road” college of their university has been established. A series of national talent training bases for the “Belt and Road” in Beijing, the China-Spain Joint Research Center for Advanced Materials, the “Belt and Road” International Talent Training Center of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry International Capacity Cooperation Enterprise Alliance, and “Silk Road” scholarships. The international student training platform has formed an education system for foreign students in China covering different levels of language preparatory, undergraduate, master, and Ph.D., and cultivated a large number of international talents who know China and China. The college has actively promoted the "Belt and Road" visit training program. More than 50 experts from more than 10 countries, more than 20 universities and institutions The visit to their school has made a positive contribution to the international cultural integration and the international development of the school.
The university, covering an area of 64.4 hectares, is composed of 4 campuses:
East campus (headquarters): located on the eastern section of the North Third Ring Road, southeast of the Asian Games Village.
West campus: On the central section of the West Third Ring Road.
North campus: located in Changping, near Lake Shisanling. Most of the North campus had been sold to the China University of Petroleum while the remaining will be the dormitory for the staff, since the new North campus, a.k.a. Nankou campus is a little bit more far from the East campus and requires an additional dorm for staff.
Nankou campus: located in Changping, about 5 km from the Changping Xishankou station of Beijing Subway Changping line. Near the Institute of Nuclear Energy Technology, Tsinghua University.
Currently, the undergraduates in BUCT spend their first 3 years in the Nankou campus and then transferred to the East section for the fourth year of the study. Some of the postgraduates in BUCT spend their first year in the north campus, too.
The east campus is designated for all postgraduate students.
