Shantou is a coastal city in China’s southeast Guangdong province with around 5 million inhabitants. Facing the South China Sea and the island of Taiwan, the city lies in the metropolitan region known as Chaoshan and is conveniently situated in the proximity of several important cities including the provincial capital of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Hong Kong. As one of the five original Special Economic Zones in China, it is still an important harbor, economic center, and knowledge hub in eastern Guangdong. The city is known for its pleasant subtropical climate, beautiful mountain, islands and shores, delicious seafood, and unique local culture.

SUMC Campus
Shantou University Medical College currently has two campuses: the original medical campus in the historic center of Shantou city, and another modern campus shared with the main campus of Shantou University in the northeastern suburbs.
A new SUMC teaching facility located on the main campus has been completed and put into use. The new SUMC, life sciences-centered and fully multidisciplinary by integrating valuable resources, is a unique and innovative learning environment that will unite Man with Nature and be conducive to nurturing creativity among students and staff.
New SUMC Medical Education Center
The new SUMC Medical Education Center located on the main campus has been completed and put into use in 2016, marking a new milestone in the history of SUMC’s development. The new Medical Education Center, designed by Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd, covers an area of approximately 50 thousand square meters and houses modernly equipped classrooms, research laboratories, computing rooms, and others. The cutting-edge facilities including Simulated Medical Center and Human Life Science Hall enable our students to learn and develop in a stimulating environment. The new SUMC, life sciences-centered and fully multidisciplinary, is well-positioned to lead in medical education reforms in China, join the ranks of top research universities and colleges, and produce competent medical professionals to serve the region, the nation, and even the world.
Simulated Medical Center
The Simulated Medical Center, formerly named Clinical Skills Training Center, was established in 2002 as the first of its kind in China. The center has recently undergone a significant expansion and upgrade, and has been relocated to the new Medical Education Center on the main campus in 2016. Designed as an actual modern hospital, the center provides an advanced platform for early clinical practice and sophisticated clinical skills training and assessment base to our medical students and residents from all levels. The nearly 6,000 square meter center runs on the sophisticated technologies and houses a number of multi-purpose training rooms and a full series of state-of-the-art clinic rooms and simulated facilities including intensive care unit (ICU) and hybrid virtual operating room. In addition to standardized patients, the center is equipped with various high-end simulators and virtual network technologies such as SimMan 3G simulator, the first virtual hybrid operating system imported from Sweden in Asia, automatic delivery simulator, simulated laparoscopy training system, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) model, anesthetic machine, microscopic operating system, and multi-functional operating table.
Human Life Science Hall
The Human Life Science Hall is an interactive, evolving place of discovery of the human body. There are nine stations with over 600 unique human specimens that demonstrate the embryonic development and each organ system of the human body, while the last station features a most technologically advanced anatomy visualization system – Anatomage Table for anatomy education. The Anatomage Table enables students to learn anatomy in 3D exactly as they would on a fresh cadaver and beyond what any cadaver could offer. In the hall, we would like to walk with you in developing a deep respect for human life, art and medicine, and in saluting those who donated their bodies for the meaningful cause of medical education.
Living in SUMC
SUMC encourages students to form their own organizations and to participate in various campus activities and community services, providing facilities, equipment, and financial support.
The student organizations consist of the Student Union, an autonomous organization responsible for defending students’ interests and providing a variety of services to their fellow students, and over 30 student associations and clubs. They are active in organizing various extra-curricular activities for their fellow students, which makes our campus life more vigorous and energetic.
SUMC sees the value of engaging students in cultural activities, thus sponsoring The Campus Art and Culture Festival and The English Science and Technology Festival every year. The Campus Art and Culture Festival consists of competitions (dancing, singing, event hosting, calligraphy, painting, photography, dorm interior design, and skits), concerts, and talent shows while The English Science and Technology Festival includes science paper presentations and competitions (multimedia courseware, speech, and plays) in English.
Sports Facilities
The main campus houses a series of athletic facilities with a total area of 36,200 square meters including 28 table tennis tables, 17 badminton courts, 14 basketball courts, six tennis courts, three volleyball courts, three fitness rooms, two swimming pools, one gymnastics room, one staking rink, and one football field. The newly built sport and entertainment park, designed by the renowned architect David Manica, covers an area of 52,000 square meters and boasts a multi-use arena, a natatorium with a competitive Olympic swimming pool, sport and fitness training facilities, a flexible grand conference hall, a 200 room boutique hotel, and an underground carpark. The green roof garden incorporates a series of raised landscape beds, turf areas, and both paved and aggregate walking zones.
Computer Networking and Information Services
In addition to providing basic network services, SUMC gives priority to applying advanced internet technologies in teaching, scientific research and administration.
SUMC has set up over 30 themed websites for teaching and learning. In particular, the Clinical Skills Center web portal, because of its rich resources, is very popular among our students.
SUMC has also established various network application systems to provide network services for teaching and self-directed learning, including the online course evaluations, online grade reports, online USMLE tests, online self-study tests, interactive English learning network, interactive digital microscopy learning system and mental health testing system.
