Shantou is a coastal city in China’s southeast Guangdong province with around 5 million inhabitants. Facing the South China Sea and the island of Taiwan, the city lies in the metropolitan region known as Chaoshan and is conveniently situated in the proximity of several important cities including the provincial capital of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Hong Kong.
As one of the five original Special Economic Zones in China, it is still an important harbor, economic center, and knowledge hub in eastern Guangdong. The city is known for its pleasant subtropical climate, beautiful mountain, islands and shores, delicious seafood, and unique local culture.
