Focusing on engineering, Hubei University of Technology is a comprehensive university, covering eight disciplines including engineering, liberal arts, science, arts, economics, management, law, and education. Hubei University of Technology was originally established in 1952. In 1984, Hubei Institute of Light Industry merged with Hubei Academy of Agricultural Machinery to form Hubei Polytechnic University, and was renamed as Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) in 2004. HBUT is a key development university of Hubei Province, HBUT has been assessed as “a high level, standard-setting, and backbone university of the province’s higher education system” by the Party Committee and the Provincial Government of Hubei Province. In 1986, HBUT earned the qualification to confer Master’s degrees and recommend outstanding undergraduates to be exempt from the postgraduate entrance exam. It won the title “the university with an excellent graduate employment rate” in 2010. In 2014, it attained Tier 1 university status. In 2012 and 2016, it successively entered membership of the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China Higher Educational Institutions. HBUT won the title “Higher Educational Institution of Reform on Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship” as the first group of universities national wide in 2016. It has been a doctoral degree conferring university since 2017. HBUT covers an area of more than 1.06 square kilometers, with a building area of about 1 million square meters. HBUT has fully fledged supporting facilities and infrastructure for teaching, scientific research, and public services. The student apartments are equipped with air-conditioning and hot water supply. As an outstanding university library in Hubei Province, the library is comprised of about 6 million volumes, and has an area of 46,000 square meters. HBUT has established 17 schools, Hubei Provincial Mechanical and Electrical Research and Design Institute Co., Ltd., Hubei Agricultural Machinery Engineering Research and Design Institute, and Hubei Agricultural Machinery Appraisal Station, all of which are provincial scientific research institutes,and 1 affiliated college. HBUT enrolls students from a total number of 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities throughout China, and has an enrollment of more than 20,000 full-time students of all types, including over 6,300 postgraduates. HBUT currently has more than 1,300 full-time faculty members, of whom over 710 got high academic titles, over 552 are doctoral supervisors and master’s supervisors. The proportion of teachers with doctorate degrees has reached more than 51%. HBUT has recruited 25 national elites, and more than 165 provincial experts specializing in various fields. Additionally, HBUT has recruited 358 influential scholars, 9 of which are domestic academicians and 8 are foreign academicians, as part-time professors from renowned domestic and overseas universities, scientific research institutes, and large-scale enterprises and public institutions. HBUT now has 55 undergraduate programs, of which 4 are featured nationally for innovative content, 3 are selected programs of the “Excellent Engineer Scheme” of the Ministry of Education, 4 are selected programs of the “Excellent Teacher Scheme” of the Ministry of Education, 270 are university-industry training programs, 19 provincial top-ranked majors in Hubei Province, 8 provincial branded majors, 24 majors in strategic emerging (pillar) industries and Jingchu outstanding talents collaborative education plan; 10 provincial excellent teaching teams, 8 outstanding grass-roots teaching organizations in undergraduate education. 8 are comprehensive pilot reform programs of Hubei Province, 8 are branded programs of Hubei Province, 9 are selected programs of “Professional Training Scheme for Strategic Emerging (Backbone) Industries” of Hubei Province, and 1 is a selected program of “Pilot Program for Nurturing Outstanding Innovative Professionals” of Hubei Province. 11 programs including Mechanical Design & Automation has obtained accreditation from the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association. HBUT has built 2 state-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 national engineering practice education centers; 10 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers (2 of them are key centers), 6 provincial centers for internship and practical training (3 of them are demostration centers), 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers; 1 state-level demonstration virtual simulation experimental teaching program, 3 state-level “Boutique Video Open Courses”, 4 provincial demonstration virtual simulation experimental teaching programs, as well as 35 Hubei online Courses including provincial “Boutique Video Open Courses”, “Boutique Resource Sharing Courses” and “Boutique Online Open Courses” . In recent years, it has proactively aimed to satisfy national and regional strategic demands of the development of green technologies as well as the greening of traditional technologies, and has endeavored to implement the “135+” Discipline Developmental Strategy focusing on green technologies. HBUT has 1 provincial “double first-class” construction discipline, 1 provincial leading discipline, 5 provincial characteristic disciplines, 4 key (nurtured) provincial disciplines, 2 provincial leading and characteristic discipline collections, and 37 disciplines under the “Hubei Provincial Chutian Scholar Scheme”. HBUT has established 1 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization, 21 general Master’s degree conferral programs, 1 sub-general Master’s degree conferral programs, 16 professional Master’s degree conferral program categories. HBUT has 1 key laboratory accredited by the Ministry of Education, 1 postgraduate innovation center accredited by the Ministry of Education, 1 state-level technology conversion demonstration center, 2 post-doctoral research centers, 13 provincial postgraduates research centers, 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers, 5 provincial key laboratories, 17 provincial engineering technology (research) centers, 2 provincial international cooperation centers, 2 provincial engineering laboratories, 6 provincial humanities & social sciences key research workshops, and 28 provincial university-industry co-constructed research and development centers. Since 2012, HBUT has presided over more than 2,000 scientific research programs, over 350 of them are at the state level. It has published more than 450 monographs and teaching materials, over 1,100 papers on SCI and 1,700 papers on EI. With more than 2,000 authorized patents, HBUT has earned 144 awards for science and technology, such as 1 national prize and 22 provincial prizes. Under the major demand of regional industrial development and technology research, HBUT keeps a long-term cooperation with more than 400 large and medium-sized enterprises, which positions it near the top of the ranking list for Science and Technology Service for Economic and Social Development of Hubei Province among provincial higher educational institutions. Selected in the EI source catalog, the China Mechanical Engineering has won “Top 100 Outstanding Academic Journals of China” for 12 years straight and is highly rated in “Journals of China with Highest International Academic Impact”, “Boutique Technical Journals of China”, and “Top 100 Technical Journals of China”.
