🏫 About Wuhan University (WHU)

The history of Wuhan University can be traced back to Ziqiang Institute, which was founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, the then governor of Hubei Province and Hunan Province in the late Qing Dynasty. In the process of development and evolution, the institute changed its name several times before it was finally named Wuhan National University in 1928. It is one of the earliest comprehensive national universities in modern China. By the end of 1946, the university had established 6 colleges, the colleges of liberal art, law, sciences, engineering, agriculture and medicine. In 2000, an amalgamation of the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University was announced, which ushered in a new era in its 100 years of development.

For the past century, Wuhan University has built an elegant palatial architectural complex of primitive simplicity which blends perfectly the eastern architectural style with that of the west. It is honored as the “Most Beautiful University in China.” Furthermore, Wuhan University’s centennial humanistic accumulation boils down to its succinct motto, that is, “Improve Oneself, Promote Perseverance, Seek Truth and Make Innovations.”

Since its establishment, Wuhan University has cultivated more than 300 thousand professional talents in various occupations, among whom there are over 100 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. They have made great contribution to the national construction and social advancement. The remarkable achievements of Wuhan University have won itself an extensive international reputation. In 1999, the world renowned journalSciencelisted Wuhan University as one of the most prominent institutions of higher education in China.

Burgeoning are the international exchanges and cooperation of Wuhan University in recent years. It has established cooperative relationship with more than 400 universities and research institutes in over 70 countries and regions.

Question: Q: Can I submit English proficiency certificate to replace ILETS?
      Answer: A:
For degree programs taught in English, a TOEFL or IELTS certificate is needed.

However, if you are a native English speaker then you don’t need an English certificate.

If you are a non-native English speaker and your previous education was taught fully in English, please provide a letter from your school/university (stamped and signed) to certify that the medium of instruction was English. This letter can be used as your English certificate.

Some Chinese universities also accept other English certificates, e.g. China Admissions IET which you can register to take the exam here iet.china-admissions.com

"Wuhan University may be considered one of the best in China but to tell you the truth the international school is not the best and as an international student you will never have priority. I would expect a little more effort made by the administration in certain areas. The dorms are okay, some buildings can be infested with critters you did not expect and the place will not be the cleanest but the place is generally liveable. The best part of the experience for me was the people that I made and the friends I made. More often than not from students who have studied in China, you'll hear that the best part is actually coming to China not so much the studying here. What I mean by that is overcoming cultural and language barriers, making friends in an entirely new country and environment, getting used to unusual food etc. So if I am brutally honest about Wuhan University then I would say it will not be the best standard of education you could receive if you're taught in English or Chinese (but especially in English). The bigger faculties like law and medicine will generally have better lecturers and maybe even some foreign professors but the quality of education in the smaller ones may not be as good. Definitely take coming here with a pinch of salt. Yes, studying on scholarship is an attractive offer, but think about what you really want from your education. Hope this helps. "
