East China University of Science and Technology is a public research university located in Shanghai, China. Originally established with a focus on chemical technology, it has evolved into a comprehensive university that covers all academic disciplines and offers a large variety of majors. It is a Chinese Ministry of Education Double First-Class Discipline University, with Double First-Class status in certain disciplines. The school encompasses two campuses and a science park in the Xuhui, Fengxian, and Jinshan districts of Shanghai.

The Bioengineering programme traces its roots back to 1955 when it was established as China's first antibiotic manufacturing engineering programme, making a historic contribution to the founding and growth of the country's antibiotic industry. In 2008, it was designated as a National Key Programme, and in 2010, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as part of the Excellence Engineer Programme. In 2012, it was recognized as a National Engineering Practice Education Center in collaboration with industry. The programme passed the national engineering education accreditation twice, in 2016 and 2019. In 2017, the "Intelligent Biomanufacturing" project was approved as a New Engineering Research and Practice Project by the Ministry of Education, and in 2018, the programme was authorized to offer a dual-degree programme in "Bioengineering" in cooperation with Brandenburg University of Technology in Germany. In 2019, the Bioengineering programme was selected for the Ministry of Education's First-Class Programme Construction, receiving wide recognition for its engineering education both domestically and internationally. The Bioengineering programme adheres to a student-centered, outcome-oriented educational philosophy, cultivating well-rounded professionals with a strong foundation, practical skills, high quality, international vision, and innovative spirit. The program emphasizes the integration of biology and engineering in its training, implementing diverse talent cultivation plans. It follows an international education approach, offering various undergraduate exchange programmes with renowned universities and enterprises in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Over the past five years, it has compiled and published seven national planning textbooks and has received a second-class National Teaching Achievement Award, a first-class Teaching Achievement Award from the China Chemical Education Association, and two Shanghai Teaching Achievement Awards. The employment rate of graduates exceeds 98%, covering fields such as biomedicine, energy and chemical engineering, green manufacturing, and food and environmental protection. This programme adopts an interdisciplinary training model, guided by the talent demands of the bioengineering and pharmaceutical industries. It integrates multiple disciplines, including chemical engineering and technology, bioengineering, and pharmacy, with a focus on enhancing students' comprehensive qualities and practical skills. The curriculum is designed to align with the cutting-edge developments in the field, aiming to cultivate high-level, versatile talents equipped with expertise in product development, production, quality control, and project management within the bioengineering and pharmaceutical sectors. ECUST devotes itself to develop international cooperation and has established long-term and extensive academic exchanges and joint training cooperation with more than 200 universities, colleges, enterprises, and research institutions from all over the world, including the United States, Germany, Britain, France, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Australia, etc.

Academics:

It has a strong tradition of working with industries. The university is now developing into a multi-disciplinary higher educational institution with a balanced curriculum of science, engineering, economics, management, law, humanities, and arts spread across 15 academic schools.

The university offers 13 first level and 81 second-level doctoral programs, 25 first level, and 147 second-level master programs and 65 undergraduate programs. The total number of full-time students has reached around 24,140, including 15,460 undergraduates, 7,110 postgraduates studying for master's degrees, and 1,570 Ph.D. candidates.

Since 2007 the university has operated an exchange programme with the Technical University of Applied Sciences Lübeck in Germany. ECUST also operates a joint programme with L'École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie in Rennes and a joint business school with the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu in Romania.
